Standard 3: Standards and Curriculum: Skills and Knowledge of Dance Arts

Accomplished teachers use their knowledge of dance to aid students in acquiring the skills to create, perform, critically analyze, interpret, and evaluate works of art in dance.

These documents are from a lesson I taught about nutrition, which also dealt with the choreographic device of repetition. This lesson demonstrates my ability to incorporate content from related fields (physical education, health, and biology) and to encourage healthy practices in my students to help them become the best dancers they can be. It also shows how I can make connections between different areas to deepen students' learning.

These slides introduce the Shim Sham tap dance, including its history and its important characteristics, and were presented as part of a unit on tap dance. This demonstrates how I incorporate dance history into my lessons to help students understand the context of dance, which aids them in the artistic processes of responding and connecting to dance. It also shows how I use material from different dance styles and cultures to present a broad and diverse view of dance.

This lesson plan teaches different effort and dynamics qualities through "exploring other planets." The lesson instructed students in exploring and applying elements of dance to manipulate movement and helped them build skills in the artistic processes of creating and performing. This exploration of movement also aids students in developing their kinesthetic awareness of how their body moves.
